fresh, sustainable, important

About our Foods

It is difficult to just list the foods we offer because each food has a story or at least some sort of explanation behind it.

Organic or Not?

We do not focus on organic. Sustainable farming practices are important to us. We believe that by not requiring organic certification and by developing relationships with conventional farmers we will be able to encourage more farmers to farm more sustainably. I am always asking our farmers what crops they spray and how recently they sprayed. I label any food that is organic or unsprayed and do not put a label on conventionally grown foods. Often certain foods are grown conventionally but have not been sprayed because the farmer did not feel the need to use chemicals to ward off a pest or weeds. For strawberries and raspberries I find farmers who agree ahead of time to not spray their crops so that we can buy them unsprayed.

Wholesale or What?

We mark up the foods we sell 25-35% depending on the food. There is rarely a discount for buying large quantities because it takes the farmer just as long to pick each pint of raspberries in one flat as in 20 flats. The farmers sell to me at a price they feel is fair. I ask them to be sure that they are charging enough to compensate themselves and their families for the work and expense they put into growing the food.

Bailey's Local Foods does not warehouse food. We do not have the facilities to store food. That limits us in what we can do but it also means that you get the freshest produce available because we pick it up from the farm and take it directly to you. It does not sit in a warehouse.
